www.thesouthern.com 3B The Somen Ilundcan Sunday, December 4, 2005 Benton captures title at Du Quoin Tip-off Classic! Big runs lead West Frankfort past Marion "It was a great week for us, and we hope we can keep it rolling." Also important for the Rangers was their ability to adjust to Du Quoin's guards on the defensive end, and staying poised and playing within themselves offensively, "We had the chance to see Du Quoin play all week, and we knew their guards were strong penetrators and that they would spread the floor on us, and I thought our kids did a nice job against it after getting burnt a couple of times," said Wynn. "I also thought bur kids did a great job of clock management, especially late in the game. We had some good possessions, and I hope our kids can recognize late in games when we're up, when we need to do that." Leading the selections for the All-Tournament team was Benton guard and top-vote getter Seiger Shurtz. Teammates Satterfield and Hammond joined him on the 11-member squad. Also selected were Jarron Carlton and Arthaniel Davis (Cairo); Dee Williams and Scottie Anders (Du Quoin); Marion's Dustin Kendrick (43) comes up with a defensive rebound between and Michael Warren in the first quarter on Saturday.

BY JEREMY KEITH FOR THE SOUTHERN DU QUOIN After playing its best game of the young 2005 season just a few hours earlier in its win over Cairo, the Du Quoin Indians tried everything they could to pick up a win against Benton Saturday, and clinch a share oftheDu Quoin Tip-Off Classic title. However, a combination of the Rangers' tough perimeter defense, poise on the offensive end and the Indians' tired legs proved to be too much for Du Quoin, in Benton's 55-43 win, giving the Rangers a 4-0 record and their second consecutive Tip-Off title. With Benton leading 16-15 with 6:20 to go in the second quarter, the Rangers ripped off a 17-2 run, capped by Mason Satterfield's third three-pointer of the first half, giving Benton a 33-17 lead just before the half. Du Quoin (2-2) hoped guard Ridge Thompson's three at the halftime buzzer provided some momentum for the second half, but the Rangers' came out of the gates quickly in the third to make sure that didn't happen. The Rangers opened the second half with a 16-4 run, led by Bryson Hammond's five points, extending Benton's lead to 50-26, putting the game out of reach.

Benton head coach Matt Wynn is pleased with his team's strong start to the season, and hopes that its comeback win over Cairo on Fridaynight and its championship win Saturday will provide some confidence for the rest of the season. "I'm just really proud of our kids, they played tremendous tonight," said Wynn. "I thought Friday's game was a big confidence boost, especially for our young kids, and I thjnk it made them less apprehensive coming in here and playing in a championship game. TERRIERS: Grab FROM PAGE1B four new starters. "We have to have post touches to win.

We can't rely on our outside game," said Parker, who hit 5-of-ll from the field and l-of-2 free throws. Said Carbondale coach Jim Miller, "He just brings a toughness. He just refuses to lose. It doesn't matter if it's a rebound, a loose ball, of he's looking for the assist. We need that right now.

I like his on-court demeanor. As long as that is channelled in a positive way, which I think it has been, he's going to be an asset. Not only in today's game, but down the road as well." Cass, perhaps Carbondale's biggest asset, came off the bench to win the game's most valuable player award with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 DePaul committee entered with 4:18 to go in the opening quarter and was in the scoring column just over a minute later. The only returning starter from last year's Class AA state runners-up put back a miss to put the Terriers up 16-4, adding another stickback with 2:34 to go in the first.

"I didn't want to let not starting bring me down," Cass said. "We did pretty good. After the first game we didn't know exactly what we had, because it was the first time playing together. We're still getting to know how everybody feels and everybody plays. After the second game, we're about, where we thought we'd be." In its first game of the season, Tilghman fell behind quickly behind Carbondale's hot shooting and an 11-rebound assault off the glass.

The Terriers hit 10 of their opening 16 shots and all but put the game away by the break, taking a 22-point lead into the locker room. Miller, a defense-first teacher, liked what he saw at both ends of the floor in Carbondale's second victory. "If you look out on the floor, they have a lot of athletes. I thought the pressure that we applied forced them out of their offense," he said. "Every basket they had was hard.

BY SCOTT MEES THE SOUTHERN MARION A pair of 12-0 runs in the second and third quarters propelled West Frankfort to a 66-54 win over Marion Saturday in boys prep basketball. Marion (3-3) guard Nick Allen drove the baseline in the third quarter for a layup to cut the Redbirds' lead to 40-33, but West Frankfort's Matt Weeks and Isiah Simelton turned it up for a big run. "To beat a team like Marion you know you are against a team that is well-coached," said West Frankfort coach Kevin Toney. "They (Marion) aren't going to beat themselves." Simelton, a 6-foo-5 sophomore, ran the fast break and received a beautiful no-look pass from Keith Jones for a layup as the Redbirds extended their lead to 46-33. Simelton nailed a jump shot in the lane, and Weeks stole the ban at midcourt and drove in for another easy basket the Redbirds led 50-33.

Allen hit a pair of 3-pointers to close out the third quarter and bring Marion within 55-39. AUen led the Wildcats with 21 points, including five from beyond the arc. Center Michael Simmons made a short basket as Marion drew to within eight points at 60-52, but the Redbirds were simply too Prep Roundup Boys basketball Egyptian 64, Fort Bowman 50 TAMMS Chalen Payne scored 22 points and led the Pharaohs to a quick lead they would not relinquish.
