Students learned techniques for dealing attending Anna-Jonesboro, Cairo, Century, Cobden, Dongola, Egyptian, Goreville, Meridian, Shawnee and Vienna high schools. Applicants must be in the top 40 percent of their class after seven semesters of high school, have attended the school for at least one year, plan to attend a college in Illinois and be a resident of Illinois. UPS offering scholarships SOUTHERN ILLINOIS The American Society of Safety Engineers will award six scholarships with funds made available by the United Parcel Service. The scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and minority college students who are studying occupational safety and health-related fields. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average, have good academic standing and be recommended by a safety faculty member. The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore at Massac County High School who plans to enter the escrow program at Shawnee Community College.

The scholarship is given in memory of Sabrina Atkinson who died in an accident in September. Her grandmother, Mary Atkinson, created a foundation to provide scholarship money to other students enrolling in the Escrow program. For more information, call (618) 524-7315. Agency offering scholarships WEST FRANKFORT The Crosswalk Community Action Agency will award scholarships to low income students from Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson and Williamson counties.

Funds were made available from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development Community Service Black Grant. Applications must be submitted by April 8. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors or Crosswalk Community Action Agency, 410 W. Main, West Frankfort, or by calling (618) 937-3581. In addition, the conference featured a self-discovery workshop where participants learned how to find their own success in life. Herrin senior named finalist HERRIN Herrin High School senior Jordan Timmermann was named a finalists in the 2005 competition for the National Merit Scholarship Awards. Timmermann was chosen out of 16,000 students nationwide to submit his application. The field has since been narrowed to 8,200 students and each will soon will be receive scholarship applications. Timmermann will be awarded a certificate at Honors Night at the high school in April.

Legislative scholarships offered OLNEY Eight General Assembly scholarships will be awarded to students in the 108th House Legislative District. Applicants must live in the district, be accepted at one of Illinois' public universities as a full-time student and show evidence of activity in public and civic affairs.
