"We have a lot of kids who accept their roles well and pick up the slack." One of those kids in Graskewicz, who said later he enjoys playing against a zone because he's a better outside shooter than penetrator. Graskewicz, however, wasn't the only sophomore who performed well for tlie Panthers.

Ray Harriss, a center, tallied nine points and grabbed four rebounds in a reserve role. Graskewicz and Harriss could mean a bright future for the Panthers, who advance to the championship game Saturday night against the winner of tonight's Chester-Steeleville game. "They both have a chance of being outstanding players, "Corn said. "But they have to make a commitment to basketball. I think they will because they're good kids." The Mustangs displayed a talented sophomore of their own in Crain, who netted 18 points.

Senior center David Heins as he has done most of the season paced the Mustangs with 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. It was a bitter defeat for Gorham, which last year also compiled a glittering mark (22-4), only to lose in the regional tournament. Quails, though, said he was proud of his team's effort. "We still won 20 games," he said. "I told the graduating seniors that when you go to a school with just 90 kids, you couldn't ask for more." Quails, who completed his fifth season as Mustang coach, admitted his team, an independent, is hampered by a weaker regular-season schedule than most teams it faces in the regional tournament.

But he couldn't offer a solution to the problem because most bigger schools, he said, won't schedule Gorham. "They feel they have everything to lose and nothing to gain," the coach said. By Man Fredman Of The Southern Illinoisan When the Pinckneyville High School basketball team began Thursday night's Gass A regional semifinal in a full-court press, Jerry Quails knew his club was in trouble. MA good press has hurt us all year," the Gorham coach said after his Mustangs were eliminated by the host Panthers, 78-65. Quails, whose team finished the season with a 20-6 mark, complained that the Mustangs don't have enough overall quickness to combat a sticky press like the Panthers used Thursday.

"We were taking a chance," Pinckneyville Coach Dick Corn said, referring to the press that shook the losers in the early going, "and it just happened to work out for us tonight." The Panthers, now 19-7, also were aided by torrid perimeter shooting from sophomore guard Wade "Goose" Graskewicz, who poured in a game-high 22 points, 14 of which came in the first period on seven long-range buckets. That forced Quails to realign his zone defense to a "triangle and two," meaning three Mustangs stayed in a zone, another was free to roam around and the other was forced to follow Graskewicz. The strategy worked but only for a while. Graskewicz didn't score in the second period, and the inspired Mustangs battled back to take a 21-20 lead with 5:59 in the half when sophomore guard Dale Crain sank a long jumper. But the Mustang lead was short-lived.

Panther forward Steve Houghland hit a short jumper sandwiched by two buckets from the other forward, Steve Hull, sparking Pinckneyville to a 26-21 advantage it never relinquished. The Panthers increased their margin to 33-26 at halftime and weren't challenged seriously in the final half. They enjoyed a 54-41 margin at the end of the third period before taking their widest lead, 65-49, with 5:09 remaining in the game. Thursday's victory was a microcosm of the Panthers' entire season, Coach Corn said, adding he was pleased that after Graskewicz was held in check, alaoced attack lea Mend st Ceotysy At Kankakee Willibrord 76, Mantino 75 McNamara 70, Peotone 60 At Klrkland Elgin St. Edward 55, Burlington 53 At LaHarpe Nauvoo 74, Dallas City 70 At Litchfield Hillsboro 48, Litchfield 46, 3 ot At Mahcmet Saybrook 71, Farmer City 58 Deland Weldon 61, Clinton 57 At Menlto Forman 69, Green Valley 66 At Marshall Neoga 46, Martinsville 45, 2 ot Egyptian 78, Shawnee 69 At Mount Sterling Mendon Unity 59, Liberty 55 At New Berlin Porta 51, New Berlin 46 At Onarga Chatsworth 69, Cullom Tri-Polnt 66 Ford Central 63.
