"When kids played in vacant lots and something hurts, they'd stop," says Dr.

Lyle Micheli. "But these days, there's a coach blowing a whistle and they keep going. They're afraid to complain, and the injury becomes worse." Micheli is director of the Sports Medicine Division at Children's Hospital in Boston, working feverishly to teach adults both coaches and parents that serious injuries aren't necessarily part of games, "Children must be able to enjoy sports participation without being excessively pressured to win at all costs by adults who lack proper consideration for the development of these children's bones, joints and emotions," Micheli wrote in a new medical journal article. A former Harvard University football and rugby player, Micheli says 14 million American youngsters are involved in organized games, and too many are suffering needless muscle sprains, bone fractures or worse. "It's a question of public education," he said.

"We have to improve training and equipment and change rules." But Micheli also points out that even to play 'beosbol The purpose of baseball at the highest level is not so much to crown a champion but to select players to represent Cuba in international competition.
