Winner Game No. 2 By Alan Fredman Of The Southern IUinoisan A 19-3 record would be sufficient to make most coaches boast but not Jeff Richey. To him and other Class A' basketball coaches throughout the state, records suddenly are meaningless. "You can throw the 19-3 out the door," the Carrier Mills coach said. "That part is over.

"We're starting out at Richey's Wildcats aren't alone. When Class A regional tournaments begin Monday, it marks the start of new season that schools hope won't end for them until March 17, the date the state championship game will be played in Champaign. Along with the new season comes added pressure. There's no margin for error. One loss and you're eliminated.

Bob Bogle is aware of the rigors of tournament competition. The coach of the defending Class A state champion, Nashville, Bogle said he doesn't want tye Hornets to get mentally "up" for each game because it could be harmful. "I want them to go at an even keel," said the fourth-year Nashville coach, whose club has an excellent shot at becoming the first team to win two con-. secutive Class A titles since the two-class system began in 1972. The Hornets, 24-1 and rated No.

2 in the Associatied Press state poll, open defense of their title Wednesday night in the Carlyle Regional Tournament against the winner of Monday night's Carlyle-Odin game. Bogle said his team is mature enough to ignore the pressure. "The kids are going to be relaxed They've been there before and know what to expect." Two things the Hornets can expect are standout performances from Roger Stieg and John Jankowski. years. Cairo, 19-5, had won 19 consecutive games after dropping its season opener to McLeansboro.

But the Pilots had lost four straight prior to Saturday night's game at Breese Central. Cairo Coach Bill Chumbler isn't worried, though, because he attributes the losses to the grueling schedule his club has played recently. One loss occurred to highly rated Madison, one to a talented Blytheville, team and another, of course, to the Bobcats. "They can scare the britches off you," said Chumbler, whose Pilots won 73-64 at Meridian earlier this season. Team balance has been a key to the Pilots' success.

The leading scorer has been junior forward Taurice Mallory. Sophomore center Anthony Webster and senior forward Steve Crume are powerful re bounders. Several other Southern Illinois teams have good chances to advance through the Gass A combat. Take Carrier Mills, for instance. Since bowing to Cairo 81-71 on Jan.

19, the Wildcats have won 10 straight. Their success is due largely to guard Dave Taborn and center Steve Evans, both of whom are averaging close to 20 points per game. Richey also praised Evans for his rebounding. "He's the best 6-2 rebounder in Southern Illinois," said the Wildcat coach, whose club faces a stiff challenge from the host club in the Ridgway Regional Tournament. Three teams have posted respectable marks because of their defensive prowess.

McLeansboro, 16-7, is No. 2 among Southern Illinois schools in team defense (Nashville is first). But the biggest problem for Coach Dave Lee's club "They're talented in every phase of the game," Bogle said about his 6-7 stars. "And they're unselfish." Both are averaging close to 20 points per game, rebounding well and playing stubborn defense. Bogle said he knows the road back to Champaign could be a rocky one.

"We're going to try to get back there," he said. "And once we get up there things will take care of themselves." Perhaps the stiffest competition for Nashville will come from one of two arch rivals who could collide in the finals of the Meridian Regional Tournament Cairo and the host Bobcats. Boosted by the return of two players who were ineligible academically for the first semester 5-11 Mario Pratt and 6-2 Dwight Guthrey the Bobcats have a 19-5 record. One of their recent wins was a 55-54 thriller at Cairo, the first time the Bobcats had defeated the Pilots in five Wisconsin 72, Northwestern 70 Anderson 69, Franklin 68 Virginia 75, Maryland 72 Colby 108, Bowdoin 94 Lafayette 93, Rider 69 Morehead St 98, E. For the past few years, Gorham has been playing stout defense.

And this year is no exception as Coach Jerry Quails' Mustangs, 19-5, rank No. 3 in defense in the area. But Gorham has been weakened recently by the flu. Center David Heins, forward Joe Circardo and forward Craig Mueller all have been sidelined, but Quails said they should be at full strength for the tournament. The had better be because the Mustangs face a stiff challenge in the Pin- 8iF 26 72.
