There wasn't much headway on the upside, and there were plenty of backward areas, but the trend was up nevertheless. Gains came to a little better than 51 a share among leading issues with the less frequent losses extending to around a dollar. Stocks going higher included Pennsylvania Railroad, Gulf Oil, Western Union, St. Regis Paper and International Harvester.

On the downside were such issues as United Air Lines, Du Pont, American Woolen, Republic Steel, General Motors, Montgomery Ward and Zenith Radio. Japanese dollar bonds were higher while corporate loam held steady in the bond market.
