Carbonda le- Herrlrt-AAurphysboro-Marlon Peg Fourteen John A. Logan College has forfeited its championship of last month's Volunteer Holiday Basketball Classic because it used an ineligible player in the title game, Athletic Director Bob Brown said today. Brown said Dean Taborn played five minutes in the championship game, scoring two points, despite being ineligible because he had not served a year's, probation as a transfer student from Southeastern Illinois College at Harrisburg. Brown said Logan officials had misinterpreted National Junior College Association rules, believing erroneously that transfer students could play after an 18-week probationary period if a certain number of academic courses were passed. Taborn, a former Carrier Mills prep star, will be eligible to play next season.

Brown said. The Volunteer Holiday Classic championship has been awarded to previous runner-up Dyersburg State. Logan 7) title Ji SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1979 forfeits Jazz does CCemioo; agaiimst soire vs.r too bad irest of Spuirs had to play AP Photo By The Associated Press Considering that New Orleans was 2-18 on the road this season and the San Antonio Spurs had won six in a row at home and 10 of their last 11 overall, maybe the Jazz did pretty well to battle to an 18-18 tie with Larry Kenon in the last quarter. Unfortunately for Elgin Baylor's club, the rest of the Spurs scored 23 more over the same span to give San Antonio a 123-97 National Basketball Association victory Wednesday night. Kenon, ignoring a sore wrist, scored 12 of his 18 fourth-quarter points in a six-minute span during which the Spurs scored 21 straight points to go from a 90-89 edge to a 111-89 lead.

He finished with 35 points and 17 rebounds. -J "I thought I played a pretty good game overall. Once we got our running game going, we took off," Kenon said in quite an understatement The Jazz, led by Truck Robinson's 29 points for the game, led 54-50 at half-time and stayed close until the 21-point blowout, but 30 errors, most in the final quarter, left a sour taste in Baylor's mouth. In other NBA games, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Atlanta Hawks 99-96, the Philadelphia 76ers crushed the Chicago Bulls 111-98, the Indiana Pacers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 108-102, the Houston Rockets outscored the New Jersey Nets 127-122, the Kansas City Kings belted the Denver Nuggets 108-101, the Golden State Warriors bested type seats. At Anna-Jonesboro, another eight-team invitational tournament begins Tuesday with two first-round games.

At 7 p.m., Meridian will meet Crab Orchard followed by Egyptian vs. Du Quoin at 8:30 p.m. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Eldorado Holiday Tournament champion Cairo will face Brookport followed by host Anna-Jonesboro vs. Gravyille at 8:30 p.m.

The championship game will be played at 8:30 p.m. Saturday following the consolation championship game at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $1.50 for adults and $1 for students. Moire tourneys set for the Detroit Pistons 96-81 and the Seattle SuperSonics trimmed the Boston Celtics 123-116. 76ers 111, Bulls 98 Julius Erving scored 26 points and Henry Bibby added a season-high 24 as Philadelphia moved into first place in the Atlantic Division by the slimmest of margins over the Washington Bullets.

The standings read .676 for both teams, but carried out another percentage point, Philadelphia is .6764 to Washington's .6756. Kings 108, Nuggets 101 Kansas City opened a four-game lead in the Midwest as rookie Phil Ford scored 26 points in the foul-filled game. area The four-team Rend Lake Invitational begins at Waltonville High School Thursday night. A blind draw will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday to announce the pairings of the round-robin tourney, which features Sesser, Christopher, Zeigler-Royalton and host Waltonville.
