Carbondale-Herrln-Murphysbdro-Marlon Page Twelve SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN, FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1979 0 rnmeim ceFB too Anzom Stat bed sou intufcnO dmD basketball statistic 141.45 lead with a 37.6 team score in vaulting after Randy Bettis, Dan Muenz and Jeff Barlow all scored 9.45 in that event The Sun Devils, however, lost all hope of winning an event earlier when all-around standout Lindsay Nyland injured a shoulder on the rings and was scratched for the rest of the meet. Nyland's injury prevented an all-around battle with SIU-C's Rick Adams. Adams, who won the all-around Thursday at 54.3, was fifth in last year's NCAA meet, two notches ahead of Nyland. "We had outstanding scores in the last three events, but we're trying to get the first three up there," Meade said. "The thing I liked, though, was we were at least over 35 in all of them and that was the best we've done on floor exercise (35.2) in a long time.

We probably can't do much better on rings (35.6)." Recording its second-best score in four seasons, the Southern Illinois University-Car bondale men's gymnastics team ran its dual record to 30 Thursday night at the SIU-C Arena with a 217.25-210.55 win over Arizona State, last year's NCAA runner-up. The 217.25 points were the most by the Salukis this year. The only higher SIU-C score in the last four seasons was a 217.65 at Iowa late last season. "I feel pretty good now, a lot better than I did last week," Salukl Coach Bill Meade said, recalling a low-scoring win at Ball State. "That's a darn good score (217.25) for this early in the season." The Salukis, who entertain New Mexico in a combined men's and women's meet at 7:30 p.m.

today at the Arena, trailed by an even point after Door exercise, but came back to take the lead after the pommel horse and the still rings.
