By Vince Hoffard For The Southern Illinoisan The Marion Wildcats came from behind to score a 73-52 victory over Herrin in a key South Seven Conference battle Saturday night: The visiting Tigers jumped to an early 16-8 lead as Marion's leading scorer Tony "Too Tall" Jones was forced to watch the entire second quarter from the bench after picking up his third personal foul late in the first period. But Billy Pickens, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, scored 12 points in a superb second quarter, to pull the Wildcats within one at the half with the score 26-25.

"Pickens kept us in the game during the second quarter," Wildcat Coach Gene Watson said. "We feel that if we are within a few points at halftime, we will win the game because we are definitely a second-half ballclub." In the second half, Jones came to life. He hit for 11 points in the third quarter as the Wildcats used a full-court pressure defense to take a 4540 lead. "Jones has had to get used to being pushed around under the basket," Watson said. "He has averaged over 30 points in his last five ball games, and teams are starting to defend him differently." Marion used a 23-12 scoring advantage in the final quarter to blow the Tigers out of the gym.

The Wrildcats ran off 12 unanswered points when the final quarter opened, and the Tigers never threatened again. Guard Jeff Hutchsinson broke loose for. four fourth-period layups to break the game open for the Wildcats. "We've been looking for balanced scoring out of our guards all year, and tonight we got it," Watson said. Pickens had 19 points, and Hutchinson added 17 to give the Wildcats the balanced guard play that Watson said the team needed.

"When we combined good guard play with the inside game of Jones, we're hard to beat," Watson said. Jones led the WTildcats in scoring with 20 points. Irv Lukens led the Tigers, who fell to 3-4 in the conference and 6-6 overall, with 17 points. "We can't afford to lose another conference game, but if someone doesn't beat Carbondale, it won't matter," Watson said. The Wildcats improved their league record to 4-3 and currently stand 8-5 overall.

"When one speaks of conference championships," Watson said, "we're mak A near-qualifying performance by the distance medley relay team and encouraging times from a pair of freshmen distance runners highlighted Southern Illinois University-Carbondale's first indoor track meet of 1979 this weekend at the East Tennessee Invitational. The Saluki distance medley relay squad of Kevin Moore, Steve Lively, Mike Bisase and Mike Sawyer finished sixth in a time of 9:53.7, well within striking distance of the NCAA qualifying standard of 9:51. Kevin Moore started it with a 1:54 half-mile, then Mount Vernon's Lively ran a 48-second quarter-mile. Bisase had a 2:56 in the three-quarter mile leg, and Sawyer anchored with a 4:15.7 mile. Saluki head Coach Lew Hartzog also was pleased with the running of freshmen Karsten Schulz and Bill Moran.

Moran ran a 4:13.9 mile Saturday afternoon, then came back with a 2:13.1 in the 1,000 yard run. Schulz ran the 1,000 in 2:13.5 on Friday night, then recorded a 9:13.8 in the two-mile run. "I was really encouraged by the running of the two freshmen," Hartzog said. "Those are pretty good times for SSU mm almost on the outside looking in." Elsewhere Saturday night, Benton jumped out to a 32-24 lead in the first period and held on to upset highly touted Centralia 88-83 in a key South Seven Confernce match up. The Rangers' Rob Hammond exploded for a game high 28 points, and teammate Carl Shurtz added 14 to pace the victory.

John Wiegel led the Orphans with 24 points. Benton improved its record to 4-6 and Centralia dropped to 8-4. In another South Seven match, Mount Vernon handed Harrisburg its second defeat in a row, 61-45. Ram guard Jim Shrum paced the victory with 20 points, while the Bulldogs' Jon Wright gathered 16 for the losers. In the finals of the Anna-Jonesboro Invitational Cairo rolled over Egyptian 80- 38 in the title game as the Pilots took a commanding 19-3 first quarter lead.

Taurice Mallory paced the Pilot victory with 18 points, and Jeff Childs added 16. The Pharoahs were led by Don Spence with his losest point output of the year, 10. Host Anna-Jonesboro was handed a 81- 52 setback by Meridian in the third-place game. The Bobcats' Bobby McBride and Mario Pratt scored 19 and 18 points respectively. John Basler led the Wildcats with 20 points while high-scoring teammate Gary Wiggs was held to a season-low four points.

Du Quoin was led by Gordy Showalter with 25 points in capturing the consolation-bracket game 66-65 over Brookport. The Indians took command in the first quarter with a 16-4 lead and then had to hold off a late fourth-quarter rally by Brookport. At the Waltonville Invitational Tournament, Most Valuable Player Jim Mitchell of Zeigler-Royalton scored a last-second basket to push the Tornadoes over Waltonville 69-67. Mitchell led all scoreres with 32. Wal-tonville's Mark Neibel paced the losers with 20.

In the third-place game, Christopher nipped Sesser 66-65. Christopher used the 17 points of Mike Hummerickhouse and the 16 of Brian Evilsizer for the win. oim such young kids, especially for their first time out. "AU in all, I was pleased by the shape the kids came back in. We're in much better condition than we were at the same time last year." Other top efforts by the Saluks included Paul Craig's 9:10.5 for a fifth-place medal in the two-mile run, and a 594 shot put by John Marks.

Marks' throw earned him third place and was the best for a collegian in the meet. In an outstanding Friday night performance, Bisase became the first saluki to qualify for the NCAA indoor meet when he ran the mile in 4:04.31, well under the qualifying standard, to finish second. In another good Friday performance, Marion's Mike DeMattei pole-vaulted 16-0 to set a new meet and fieldhouse record and win the university division pole vault competition. Rick Rock placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 24-9. The meet" attracted more than 1,200 competitors, including many former college standouts who were eligible to compete in the open events.
