And at the rate he Is going, he might get his chance.

The 6-foot-3M senior forward scored 59 points in two games last week and is one of the area's leading scorers with an average of 24.2 points per game. This stalwart performance has earned him recognition as the Southern Illinoisan Player of the Week. A three-year starter, Kelley has been voted his team's most valuable player the past two seasons. "He (Kelley) scores a lot of points for us," Coulterville coach Ron Smith says. he also helps us out quite a bit with his rebounding.

He's quite a jumper one of the better ones in the area." Kelley, who is averaging eight points a game for the 5-2 Eagles, is quick to give praise to his fellow teammates. "We're playing together really well," Kelley says. "I don't think it would be possible for me to do anything without the other ballplayers on the team." Although the Eagles finished with a 15-10 record last season, Kelley says he Com stays as Pantheirs Before the basketball season began, Pinckneyville Coach Dick Corn felt his team would have a good year. So far, he's been right. The Panthers downed Benton 48-41 Friday, then nudged Chester 49-47 in overtime Saturday to improve their record to 3-0.

This feat has earned the team recognition as The Southern Illinoisan Team of the Week. "We thought we would have a good ball club," Corn says. "But you never really know until the season begins." The key victories also have moved Pinckneyville up one spot in the Southern Illinoisan Class A poll, from No. 7 to No. 6.

Nashville (3-0) captured all the first-place votes to retain the No. 1 position. No. 2 is Carrier Mills (2-0), which dropped McLeansbbro (4-0) to the No. 3 slot.

In the Class AA poll, Carbondale (2-0) and Centralia (2-0) are tied for first place. Pinckneyville has been led by senior guard Steve Hull, who is averaging 20 points per game despite a football injury that sidelined him for the first couple of weeks of basketball practice. The Panthers only returning starter is 6-foot-3V2 Brian Kellerman, whom Corn says has been a defensive leader.
