Totals 16 9-18 41 for Irish South Bend, Ind. (AP) Sophomore Kelly Tripucka scored a career-high 37 points Saturday night, including 17 straight in the closing minutes, as top-ranked Notre Dame wore down stubborn Dayton University 86-71. The Flyers, who beat the Irish last year, got 32 points from guard Jim Pax-son and held a nine-point lead early in the second half but fell apart down the stretch. Notre Dame rallied behind Tripucka, Tracy Jackson and Orlando Woolridge, and the Irish took the lead for good on.

two free throws by Tripucka with five minutes remaining. Dayton managed two free throws two minutes later, but Tripucka hit a three-point play and then added 11 straight free throws to lock up the contest. The Irish, 15-2, got 14 points from Jackson, 10 of those in the second and 10 from Woolridge. Dayton, got 15 points from center Richard Montague. By SIU-C Sports Information Using overwhelming strength in the sprints, Louisiana State rolled to easy indoor track wins over both Wisconsin, 75.56, and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, 77-54, Saturday afternoon at Madison, while the host Badgers nipped SIU-C, 67-64, in the double dual.

LSU won every track event under 880 yards, in addition to the long, triple and high jumps and the mile relay. The Tigers really showed their power in the 60- and 400-yard dashes, going one-two-three in the former, one-two-three-four in the latter. While the Tigers were coasting, Coach Lew Hartzog's Salukis were having a dogfight with Wisconisn that boiled down to one-quarter of an inch on the final effort of the day a triple jump by the Badgers Ron Van Os. Minutes earlier, SIU-C had a chance to wrap up the dual in the final running event, the mile relay. The Salukis led the event through the first two legs, but Kevin Moore and Mike Bisase missed on the second pass and the baton skidded off the track.

The relay win gave the Badgers a 64-58 lead over the Salukis, but SIU-C's Rick Rock and David Lee were running one-two against Van Os in the triple jump, which was still in progress. Lee, who had earlier finished second overall in the 60-yard high hurdles (7.5) and fourth in the long jump (22-5), was bothered by a leg injury after he triple jumped 46-14 on his second jump. Hart-zog then decided to rest him for the Illinois Intercollegiates next week. Lee's mark held up for second in the SlU-C-Wisconsin dual behind Rock's 47-10, until Van Os came up as the day's final competitor. He jumped 46-1 Vz to nip Lee by a quarter inch and give the Badgers their 67-64 win.

If Van Os hadn't beaten Lee, the Salukis would have won, 66-65. "We really had a pretty good meet," Hartzog said, "even though it looked like we were trying to find new ways to lose at the end. The difference in the Wisconsin dual boiled down to one-quarter inch in the triple jump. (AP) Senior Gregory Kelser's scored 18 points as Michigan State blew open a close game in the second half and rolled to a 61-50 victory over Northwestern in Big Ten basketball Saturday. The victory avenged the Wildcats' upset of MSU a week ago. The Spartans, 6-4 in the conference, played largely without sophomore st3r Earvin Johnson. Court time for the 6-foot-8 point-man and playmaker was limited by a sprained right foot suffered in Thursday's overtime victory over Ohio State. He played only the final two minutes of the game, favoring the leg slightly and scoring just four free throws.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to a 1-9 league mark and kept them buried in the basement of the Big Ten. The Spartans lead was 21-19 at half-time after they missed numerous chances from' in close during the first 20 minutes of play. But in the 10 minutes after the break, Michigan State outscored Northwestern 20-6 to take a commanding learjL Juniors Terry Donnelly and Ron Charles had 12 points each for MSU, ranked 15th nationally with a 13-5 mark. Brian Jung, Northwes tern's seven-foot junior center, had five field goals and a free throw to lead the Wildcats, 5-14 for the season, with 11 points.
