Red Bud 15 24 23 2390 Trlco 10 25 16 2071 Junior-varsity game: Red Bud 74, Trlco 45 (Trlco Is 5-14) By Mike Estel Of The Southern' Dllnoisan The Murphysboro Red Devil wrestlers met the competition head-to-head to eke out a tight 122 to 118 win over second-place Carbondale in the Class AA District Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Murphysboro. The Red Devils trailed Carbondale 53.5 to 49.5 going into the championship matches but overcame the deficit by winning three of four championship bouts against the Terriers. Murphysboro sent six wrestlers into the championships, while Carbondale it 7 tt a ii broke a 3-3 deadlock in the following 132-pound match and pinned the Terriers' Brian Brown in 3:55. "I wanted him pretty badly," Thomas said. "We knew these middle matches would be the difference.

I had to wrestle him my way, not his." Murphysboro junior Bob Chambers, 2S-1, also added more points with a 16-1 walloping of Mount Vernon's Grant Gibbons. 'He had a lot of strength," said Chambers, who won at the district level last year. "This is the first time I've wrestled Gibbons, but I figured I could beat him." The 145-pound match between Murphysboro' Steve Shields and Carbondale's Tim Knewitz proved to be the most decisive in Murphysboro's come-from-behind victory. The match was evenly fought with no more than two points separating the two until Shields scored a reversal at the end of the final period to win a 7-6 decision. "I wanted to get it even between us two before the end of the year," Shields said.

Shields and Knewitz each had won two of the four matches the two wrestlers had fought this year. Joe Samples of Marion won the 155-pound class over Harrisburg's Mike Sheldon by a 7-2 count and accomplished two firsts for the Wildcats. "Joe is the only one to ever win a first in the conference and at district for us," a Marion Coach Alan North said. Samples advanced through the district meet last year, but it was as a second-place finisher. "I was ready going into the meet," Samples said.

"I had watched a couple of upsets this afternoon, and I knew I would have to try my hardest to not let that happen to me." Benton's lone representative to the sectional meet next weekend will be Rob Lowery in the 167-pound class. Lowery beat Marion's Leo Willis in a hard-fought 6-3 match. "All the matches between the two of us this year have been close like this," Lowery said. "Willis is a real good wrestler. He's too hard to pin." The final two bouts were won by Mount Vernon.

In the 185-pound category, Ernest Badger pinned West Frankfort's Don Davey in 5:18. Heavyweight Rick Robinson won by a pin over Jay Warren of Harrisburg to conclude the regulation events. The final bout of the day was a wrestle-back challenge in the 145-pound class to second-place finisher Tim Knewitz. The challenger was Mark Miller of Harrisburg, who had finished in third place. A third-place finisher who hasn't faced the second-place wrestler in that weight class during the tournament can challenge for second place, according to the meet's rules.

In the wrestle-back event, Knewitz fought off the scrappy Miller for a 7-6 decision to keep his second-place finish. Murphysboro's Wahlund praised Carbondale's team effort. "Carbondale has a heck of a team," said Wahlund, who will send six representatives to the sectional tournament next weekend. "But now is when our second season starts. Every meet before the district is just a warm-up.

"We've got a good chance now to send these guys on to state." Carbondale Coach Bob Odum was a little disappointed with his team's performance, but he will send five representatives to the sectional meet. "We just got outhustled," Odum said. "Both teams are pretty even, and Murphysboro just did a fine job today." Mount Vernon 67, West Frankfort 64 (2 OT) MOUNT VERNON (67) Swinnen 2, Shrum 20, Doggan 21, Smith 4, S. Piper 2, M. The Red Devils had lost bv Dins in the 98- and 105-pound classes, and momentum appeared in Carbondale's favor when Terrier Don Caudle won the 112-pound class with an easy pin over Jerry Leinenbach of Harrlsburg.

But the 126-pound match between Carbondale's Chris Richard and Mur-physboro's Danny Schnautz was the turning point. "I knew if we won that one, it would start the ball rolling," Murphysboro Coach Tom Wahlund said. "We needed that momentum in the middle weights." Richard, who is the only wrestler to beat Schnautz this year, put up a stiff fight but was pinned by his scrappy opponent in 3:53. The Murphysboro crowd exploded with a standing ovation at the end of the bout. The Red Devils sealed the victory with wins in the next three weight classes, two of which were against Terrier wrestlers.

To begin the title bouts, Mount Vernon's senior Tim Moreton pinned Murphysboro's freshman Terry Easton in 2:47 for the 98-pound championship. The 105-pound match was won easily by Carbondale's Rich Freeman, who pinned Murphysboro's Mike Murphy in 1:06. "It feels pretty good to win," Freeman said, "but I know it's going to be real tough from here on." Freeman and the other champions and runners-up advance to next week's sectional tournament at Granite City South. Carbondale added more points in the 112-pound class when senior Caudle pinned leinenback in 1:44. "This is the first time I've won at the district level," said Caudle, who now is 19-1.

Mount Carmel's Mike Leek decisioned Herrin's Bob Vanek in an intense 10-5 struggle in the 119-pound class. Schanutz, 23-1, winner of the 126-pound class, praised the effort of Richard. "I had to work for it," said Schnautz, who has beaten Richard four out of five matches this season. "I'm looking for- ward to going to state (tournament) now." The Red Devils' Gib Thomas, 20-2, dominates 'A touimniey With six wrestlers in the championship matches, Fairfield easily won the Class A District wrestling tournament at Lawrenceville Saturday night with 168 points. The closest challenger was host Lawrenceville with 144.

Pinckneyville led area schools by placing in three events. The Panthers' Craig Williams won the 138-pound class by defeating Russell Carey of Lawrenceville. Second place finishes went to Randy Hill (145) and Dan Karnes (155). Carterville's John Pearsley beat Fairfield's Mike Hannafrod to win the championship of the heavyweight division. These four area wrestlers will advance to the Class A sectional tournament Feb.

17, at Mount Olive. Other area teams did not fair so well. Joppa managed to pick up 10V points with a third-place finish by Kevin Koer-ner (112), and Anna-Jonesboro failed to score. Four Orphans to go to state The host team soared to the championship with 149 points Saturday at the Class AA District wrestling tournament at Belleville West. The closest challenger was Belleville East with 95, and Centralia with 80 points.

Centralia will send four wrestlers to the sectional meet next weekend. The only Orphan to win was John Lovette in the 185-pound class. Lovette pinned Danny Hemmer of Belleville West in 2:31. Second-place finishers for Centralia were Earl Whitelow (105), Carl Fortney (119) and Bill Kingsley in the heavyweight class. SUPPLY 1S00 W.
