Page Sixteen SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN, uNDA DECEMBER 17, 1978 Carbondale-Herrln-Murphysboro-Marion 1 Terirfieir teammat ward hack up cool Faym Seoreb Johnny Fayne, Southern Illinois leading prep basketball scorer, was held to 16 points Saturday night. But his Terrier teammates picked up the slack for a 64-50 win over Herrin at Bowen Gym in Carbondale. "Johnny played awfully well in his first three games," Carbondale Coach Doug Woolard said. "He didn't play as well tonight, but we've been talking aJJ year about having the depth and ability to pick ourselves up if somebody had an off night. I think that was indicative of our play tonight." While Fayne was held to about half his 33-points-per-game average, Craig Bardo contributed 15 points, Dave Harren added 10 and Billie Anderson came off the bench to score, eight for the Terriers, now 4-0 overall.

Herrin drops to 3-1. Fayne and Harren controlled the backboards againct the smaller Tigers, each of the Terrier big men grabbing 11 rebounds. Herrin managed to stay within 33-28 at the end of the first half before the Terriers went on a 16-9 third-quarter splurge. Herrin had the game's leading scorer, Irv Lukens, who deposited 18 points. Oak Park-River Forest crushed Rolling Meadows 20-10, 20-2 to win the Class AA championship. The Terriers finished the season with a record of 27-2. "I was very proud the way the team came back," Carbondale Coach Jennifer Stanley said, referring to a 164 Terrier deficit in the first game.

"We finally got our strength at the net. I emphasized all year that our service had to be consistent, and that helped our offense keep going." Chris Brewer was the top Carbondale scorer Saturday night with 12 points including three aces in 17 serves. Julie Smith had 11 points, including one ace; Mary Maxwell had eight points, including three aces; Jill Broker had radshaw too brutal for Broncos Denver (AP) Terry Bradshaw, dissecting Denver's defense with a razor-sharp passing attack, threw for two touchdowns and set up another, sparking the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 21-17 National Football League victory Saturday. The playoff-bound Steelers ended their regular season 14-2. Denver, also playoff-bound, finished at 10-6.

Bradshaw's TD aerials of 25 yards to John Stallworth and 10 yards to Jim Smith gave him 28 for the season tops in the NFL since the pro football merger in 1970. The Steelers jumped out to a 21-0 half-time lead after Bradshaw kept a first-quarter drive alive with third-down tosses of 17 and 20 yards to Stallworth. Franco Harris plunged the final yard. After a Denver fumble at the Bronco 42, Stallworth promptly caught a 17-yarder from Bradshaw and on the next play, Stallworth outwrestled two Broncos in the end zone for a 25-yard scoring pass. Pittsburgh got one more crack in the closing minutes of the half.

Bradshaw, again scrambling to escape Denver's pass rush, found Smith wide open in the rear of the end zone for the score. Denver's Norris Weese, taking over for Craig Morton in the second half, threw touchdown passes to Haven Moses and Riley Odoms. Z3Z eight points, including one ace; and Sharon Legendre scored an acoless seven points. "We worked very hard this year," Stanley said. "Our goals at the first of the year were to go undefeated and to make it to the state tournament.

And so we're here. Some of the kids are saying we played best under pressure, and we are very proud of our teamwork. The Terriers lost their chance to move into the finals when they dropped 20-6, 20-10 decisions Saturday morning to Rolling Meadows. Rolling Meadows jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first game and coasted to an easy win. Carbondale led 3-2 and 4-2 in the second game, but Rolling Meadows tied the score 4-4 and never let the Terriers catch up.

"Rolling Meadows did what I expected it to do and harder," Stanley said. "Our blocking and hitting game was very weak." Broker was high scorer for the Terriers with five points in seven serves. Marsha Lewis, Smith, Maxwell and Legendre each had two points, Lewis and Smith both registering an ace. Sacred Heart moved into the consolation game after losing 20-11, 20-11 to Oak Park-River Forest. Carbondale Athletic Director Doug Woolard said the Terriers will be welcomed home with a caravan starting at noon today on U.S.
