Besides his club's strong defense, Woolard said he was pleased with his team's depth. He employed 10 regular players before clearing the bench late in the game. "We've established more depth than; we've ever had," said Woolard, whose club is shooting for its third consecutive South Seven crown. And how would Woolard compare this: year's team to his past two champion--ship clubs? "We need to improve our rebound-, ing," he said.

"Defensively at times we don't have the intensity on the 'spacej and "But we're as good a man-to-man-team and outside shooting club as I've: ever had." By Alan Fredman Of The Southern5 IUinoisan Tim Ricci confirmed Saturday night what many observers Have been saying all season the Carbondale Community High School basketball team is in an advantageous position in the South Seven Conference race. "They're going to be tough to beat," the first-year West Frankfort coach said after his Redbirds were thrashed by the host Terriers 75-57. "Benton has the only shot." Now 5-0 in the league, 13-1 overall, the Terriers led Benton by one game. The two clubs have two remaining matches (Feb. 6 at Carbondale and Feb.

23 at Benton.) Ricci's Redbirds had entered the weekend in second place in the South Seven with a 4-1 mark (7-3 overall) but were beaten 47-40 Friday night by Benton after squandering a five-point fourth- The game was deadlocked twice in the early going until center Dave Har-ren put the hosts ahead to stay 7-4 when he converted a three-point play with 5:06 left in the first quarter. The Terriers increased their margin to 15-8 at the end of the first period and 28-10 at halftime. The Redbirds, however, cut the deficit to 28-22 at the start of the third-period. But the Terriers then tallied two straight buckets one on a layup by Harren, the other on a layup by the Johnny Fayne, who poured in a game-high 23 points. Harren, despite being in foul trouble most of the game, contributed 15 points, and Craig Bardo, hampered by the flu this week, added 12 for the Terriers, who hit their zenith, 64-40, with 4:09 left in the game.

quarter lead. Still, Ricci said his team's mental attitude was good entering Saturday night's match against the Terriers. "We came over here ready to play," Ricci said. "The kids were disappointed we lost to Benton, but we weren't really down." But the scrappy Terriers certainly didn't make West Frankfort feel any better as they never trailed throughout the contest. "I don't think it was one of our best shooting games from the field," Terrier Coach Doug Woolard said.

"Our defense contributed to our success." Woolard's club was in a man-to-man defense the first part of the game and then switched into its heralded "space-and-trap" zone in the second quarter, forcing the outmanned Redbirds into taking several low-percentage shots.
