At the Carbondale Class AA District Tournament, Herrin handed Murphys-boro 21-14 and 20-10 losses to improve its record to 11-5 and earn the right to meet host Carbondale (21-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the championship.

"We had good spiking from Karen Humphreys and Alice Ewan," Herrin Coach Cindy Roland said. "We're hoping to play better against Carbondale, though." In other Class AA district play, Mount Vernon will meet Harrisburg at 7:30 p.m. today at Harrisburg for the cham-pionship. There was no game Wednesday. At the Sparta Class A district meet, Sparta and Steeleville both won to advance to the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Friday. In the first match between Sparta and Chester, Sparta won the first set 20-11, then absorbed a 20-9 loss before bouncing back big for a 204 finale. "I told the kids to think about the things they had done wrong on the second set," Sparta Coach Peggy Deaton said. "They came back in the final match higher than a kite. It has to be the best team effort they've shown all Chester closed the season with a 10-7 finish.

Eldorado High School will dedicate its gymnasium to late University of Evansville basketball players Mike Duff and Kevin Kingston during halftime ceremonies of Saturday night's game against Pinckneyville. Duff and Kingston were former Eldorado players who were killed, along with the entire Evansville basketball team, in a plane crash last December. The Duff-Kingston Memorial Gymnasium will feature a large plaque with pictures of both players, set into a gymnasium wall. The Eldorado School Board voted last year to name the gym in memory of the Jim Hart, left the contest late in the opening half with a severely sprained ankle. "I think you can say that Morris probably is out for the season," Wilkinson said.

The gymnastics team will be competing Friday and Saturday in the Ball State Ail-Around Classic at Muncie, Ind. The Salukis are the defending champions in that meet, which also includes defending NCAA champion Oklahoma, Indiana State, Penn State and Nebraska among its 16 entries.

Panthers pick Mathis as MVP Kerry Mathis has been named Most Valuable Player of the Pinckneyville Panther football team. Mathis, a junior, also won the award for Best Offensive Back. Senior Doug Nehrkorn won the award for Best efen-sive Back. Other award winners included: senior Steve Bostick, Most Improved Player; junior Don Wanack, Best Offensive Lineman; and senior Mark Peradotta, Best Defensive Lineman.
