Assistant Fire Chief Cliff Manis said two pumpers responded to an alarm that came at about 5:30 p.m. while firefighters were answering another alarm. The other alarm proved to be false.

The motel room was rented, but unoccupied at the time of the blaze, which Manis said officials think was started by careless smoking. Firefighters contained the fire in about five minutes and said most of the damage was caused by heat. He estimated damage to the room itself at about $1,500 and damage to the contents at about $500. The motel is owned by Pete Patel, Manis said. STEARNS FOSTER.
