The wreck occurred at 1:12 p.m., one-fifth of a mile north of Exit 65 near West Frankfort Police said Karen L. Schaefer-Williss, 28, looked in her irrirror and failed to reduce speed, hitting a semi driven by John Dennis Smith, 21, of Hornsby, in the rear. Passengers in Schaefer-Williss' car were Frank D. Williss, 24, Jacob E.

Williss, 4 months, and Christian A Thomas, 5. All received minor injuries. Police said the baby was not in a child safety restraint because his diaper was being changed at the time. All others were wearing seatbelts. Smith was treated for minor injuries.

Schaefer-Williss was charged with 'failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving while her driver's license was suspended. Marion Police are investigating the burglary of more than $3,000 in business receipts and petty cash from the Waffle House, 2703 W. DeYoung St The burglary occurred the night of April 1 or early morning of April 2, police said. The money represented several days' receipts, police said. A cellular telephone belonging to Robert Jones of Marion was stolen from a truck owned by the city and parked at the city's water plant.

The theft occurred between April 1 and Monday, police said. Carbondale A Carbondale man has been charged with felony theft over $300 after he allegedly stole a bicycle Tuesday. Police said a juvenile reported that the bicycle had been stolen at 3:36 p.m. while he and a friend were inside a business in the 400 block of East Walnut Street. The boys were able to give police a description of the suspect, and he was found a short time later.

The bicycle was recovered. Herrin Firefighters were able to prevent a fire from spreading throughout a Herrin home Wednesday, containing the moderate to heavy fire damage to the bathroom and hallway, fire Capt Jim Hilligoss said. No one was at the home, at 1 A Lane in the southwest section of Herrin, at the time of the late morning fire. Firefighters responded at 11:37 am. No injuries were reported, Hilligoss said.

Authorities would not release the name of the property owners until they could be notified of the fire. Although the fire in the two-bedroom house was contained to part of the house, it took its toll. "It looks like they lost a lot," Hilligoss said. The cause of Union County A Dongola woman has been convicted after hitting a man with her car in Jonesboro in October. Dorothy Pickles Stevens, 46, was convicted of reckless conduct last month for hitting Tommy Coryell of Dongola with her car in front of Massey's Quick Serve Amoco station in Jonesboro on Oct 13.

She was born July 23, 1937, at Jonesboro, the daughter of Car Fred "Jim" and Ruby Mae (Ben son) Westbrook. She is survived by a daughter, Heather Housden of Cobden; a son Brad Girtman of Cobden; her fa ther, Jim Westbrook of Anna; two sisters, Flo Ann Deppe of Percy and Louise Glasco of Anna; two brothers, John Westbrook of Rich mond, and Adrian Westbrook of Jonesboro; two grandchildren Chelsea and Caitlin Housden; a close friend, Delmar Lee Massey; other relatives; and many friends She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Westbrook on April 2, 1999. Mrs. Girtman was a housekeeper at Memorial Hospital of Carbon dale for the last 10 years. Funeral serviceds for Rosalie Girtman will be held at 1 p.m.

Thursday. Nellie M. Moore CARRIER MILLS Nellie Moore, 75, of 712 North Main Carrier Mills, died at 11 p.m. Tues day, April 6, 1999, at the home of a daughter, Chesta Alexander of Car rier Mills. Mrs.

Moore was born on Dec. 11, 1923, in Stonefort to the late Thorn as and Tressie (McCabe) Bundren. On Nov. 15, 1942, she married Chester Moore, who preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Chesta and Tom Alexander of Carrier Mills and Cindy and Bob Britton of Benton; a son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Jes sie Moore of Harrisburg; three grandsons, Brad Maloney of Harris burg, B.J. Maloney of Golconda and Garrett Britton of Benton; two great-grandchildren; two great- stepgrandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Ever ett Jackson of Harrisburg. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Bundren, and a sister, Minnie Gleyre. Mrs. Moore was a member of St.

Francis De Sales Church in Stone- fort. Services will be at 11 am. Friday at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. The Rev. Edward Balestrieri will officiate.

Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home. Gary Len Vaughn GOREVILLE Gary Len Vaughn, 61, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 1999, at Herrin Hospital. He was born on Dec. 10, 1937, in Johnson County to Gilbert Len and Pauline Vaughn. He retired after 30 years of serv ice in the public school systems.

He was also the past mayor of Go-reville and devoted a lifetime of service to the Goreville community. Survivors include one son, David Vaughn of Goreville; two daughters, Lisa Stewart of Vienna and Joni Frailey of Goreville; his moth er, Pauline Vaughn of Vienna; two grandchildren; and several aunts and uncles. Lita was a longtime member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville, where she was the past director of the children's church. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for over 50 years. She helped establish and was a charter member of the Carterville Senior Citizens. She was a member of Royal Neighbors Lodge in Cart erville. She was born Oct.

5, 1906, in Go- reville to Frank and Louisa (Rowe) Stokes. She married Elbert Ray Jones in 1925. He died Dec. 22, 1941. She married Clarence A Patrick on Dec.

30, 1947. He died Nov. 8, 1977. Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Sue Anderson of Keizer and Wanda Lou Larison of Chester; one son and daughter-in-law, William Paul and Betty Jones of Keiz er; one sister, Zellah Billingsley of Buncombe; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, three brothers, eight sisters and four children, Hel en Marie Jones, Frankie Lee Jones, Naomi Brashers and Oda Jane Jackson, also preceded her in death.

Myrtle I. Barnett MARION Myrtle I. Barnett, 93, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at her daughter's home in Marion. Services will be at 11 am.

Friday in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Brinkman officiating. Burial will be in Freedom Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Warder Street Baptist Church. Mrs. Barnett was a homemaker. She was a member of Warder Street Baptist Church for 57 years and the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She was born June 10, 1905, in Williamson County to Hence and Mary (Goley) Phillips.

She married Verbal W. Barnett on May 9, 1923, in Williamson County. He died May 17, 1965. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sharon Barnett and Verbal and Betty Barnett, all of Marion; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirly Jane Fox, Mary Sue and Howard Mattox and Mildred and Edward Barwick, all of Marion; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Reba Thompson of Eureka, Calif. One brother, Wesley Phillips, her parents and one infant sister also preceded her in death.

Mary Zygadlo WEST FRANKFORT Mary Zygadlo, 82, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at home. Services will be at 10 am. Friday in St. John's Catholic Church, with Father Brian Barker officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at Parker-Reedy Funeral Home. A prayer vigil will be at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St.

John's School. Mrs. Zygadlo had been an operator for General Telephone. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

She was born Jan. 1, 1917, in West Frankfort to Joe and Alary (Lukek) Stuckle. She married Michael Zygadlo on Dec. 12, 1944, in West Frankfort. He died in 1995.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Zygadlo of West Frankfort; one sister, Sophia Carello of West Frankfort; and one nephew, Gene Carello of West Frankfort Her parents and two brothers, Joe and Victor Struckle, also preceded her in death. Robert Hartley SOUTHERN ILLINOIS Robert Lee Hartley, 53, of Salem died at 7:31 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at home. Services will be at 11 am. Saturday in Aly Funeral Home in Gol-conda, with burial in Massac Memorial Gardens in Metropolis.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Burn Center or to the donor's choice.

I HERRIN Glenn Prewitt, 83 died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Jackson officiat ing. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home Mr. Prewitt worked for Illinois Central Railroad for 35 years. He was a member of Bryan Street Baptist Church. He was born April 30, 1915, in Vienna to Lee and Mary Belle (Tripp) Prewitt.

Survivors include his wife, De-muri Prewitt; one daughter, Mari- lee Fowler of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy G. and Mary Prewitt of Herrin; four great grandchildren, Brandon Antonacci and Caitlyn and Patrick Boyd, all of Marion, and Kailee Murphy of Her rin; and four granddaughters, Re- nee and Bruce Antonacci and Wendy and Tim Boyd, all of Mari on, and Kimberlee and Tim Murphy and Kelly Prewitt, all of Herrin. His parents, seven brothers and sisters and one grandson, Todd Fowler, preceded him in death. Byron Lesar CARBONDALE Byron Lesar, age 54, a resident of Carbondale since 1973, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Car bondale. He was the son of Hiram H.

and Rosa Lee C. "Rosalie" (Berry) Les ar, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his stepmother, Barbara Thomas Lesar; one uncle, James Christopher Lesar and wife Thelma of Horseshoe Bend, and aunts Marjorie Lesar of Mount Vernon (wife of his deceased uncle Albert Lesar), Nellie Berry Massie and husband Dr. Lowell Massie of Toledo, IL and Billie Berry (wife of deceased uncle Charles Berry) of Troy, Mich. He is also survived by two broth ers, James Hiram Lesar and wife May Yiang Lim Lesar of Chevy Chase, MD and Albert Keith Lesar and wife Florence Yellin Lesar of Aptos, one step-brother, Richard Thomas of Swarthmore, step-sisters, Laurel Dodds of Knoxville, Tenn.

and Rebecca Ga- lambos of Philadelphia, three nieces, Jennifer Clair Lesar of Brookline Michelle Lesar of Menlo Park, Calif, and Naomi Lesar of Aptos, Calif. Lesar Scholarship Fund, School of Law, Southern Illinois University. Ruby Counsil ANNA Ruby Counsil, 99, died at 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Herrin Hospital. She was born on Dec. 1, 1899, to Robert and Mary (McClain) Fields and later married John R. Counsil on Sept. 29, 1920.

He preceded her in death on April 12, 1988, Ruby was a member of Anna United Methodist Church She is survived by three grand children, Linda Larson and hus band, Fred, of Pryor, Danni Jo Goodman of Ohio, and Brad Lar son and wife, Renee of Garland, Texas; tliree great-grandchildren; nephew Arthur "Bud" and Jean Smith; good friends Doris Gossett of Anna, and Rodger and Janice Gossett and family of Vienna, also Robin and Connie Dodson and family of Marion; and other rela tives and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jo Larsen in 1998, and by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be at 11 am. Wednesday. Roosevelt Square, 1501 Shomaker Drive, is the subject of a continuing arson investigation into fires between Nov. 30 and New Year's Day. But fire Chief Kevin Reeves said the latest fire appears to be an accident. Reeves said a curtain caught fire in a resident's room because it was too close to a space heater.

He said residents were evacuated from the wing. There have been no arrests in the suspected arsons. and then knocked to the ground. He was treated for minor injuries at Union County Hospital in Anna. Judge D.D.

She has spoken to students at more than 600 colleges, high schools and military institutions.
