hospital. MURPHYSBORO Arthur Leroy Green, age 91, of Murphy sboro died Monday morning, Aug. 16, 1999, at his home on Green Road. He was born on Oct. 27, 1907, at the son of Nicholas and Mae a Green.

On April 7, 1929, he Green was married to Nedra L. Hanson in Mur physboro, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1974 He worked 31 years at the former Brown Shoe Company in Murphysboro and had a cus todial business for several years. He was a member of Murphysboro Lodge 498 AF AM. Survivors include his 16 chil dren and their spouses, Lilliam McKinney of De Soto, Jackie and Lester McQuaid of Mill- stadt, Arcille McDowell of Ur- bandale, Dorothy and Carl Wright of Perryville, Ruth Ann and Tom Scott of Vergennes, Ida and Lester Luketin of St Peters, Tom and Gloria Green of Hermann, Wayne and Mary Green of Carterville, Peggy Schott, Georgia and Larry Tincher, Linda Miller, Robert and Jody Green, Joe and Erma Green, Richard and Nancy Green, Jimmy and Carla Green, and Gary and Cherie Green, all of Murphysboro.

He is also survived by 43 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Koch officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. today by Murphysboro Lodge 498. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation. Dad, we all miss you.

Wayne Duke PERKS Wayne Duke, age 53, of Perks died at 3:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at his home. He was born July 26, 1946, in Cairo to Cletus Marion and Pauline (Haines) Duke. He married Jeanie Davis on March 29, 1968.

He was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church in Perks, Dongola Lodge 581 and was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a "jack of all trades" having taught welding, taxidermy and archery at Shawnee College where he was maintenance supervisor. He en joyed hunting, fishing and golf ing. He is survived by his wife, Jeanie Duke of Perks; two daughters, Vanessa (Jeff) Winding of Mermet and Melanie (Brian) Evans of Perks; one son, Jeffrey Duke of Perks; three grandchildren, Candi and Niki Winding and Sierra Evans; his parents, Cletus and Pauline Duke of Cypress; two sisters, Linda Sickling of Dongola and Sandra Miller of Wetaug; two brothers, Randy Duke of Perks and Ronnie Duke of Cypress; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. Funeral service for Wayne Duke will be at 2 p.m.

Michael Kieth Elliott BENTON Michael Kieth Elliott, 52, died at 7:03 p.m Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Franklin Hospital in Benton. Services will be at 11 a.m Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the First Christian Church in Ses-ser, with Brother Shannon Bopp officiating. Burial will be in the Hammond Cemetery in Sesser.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church. Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser is in charge of arrangements. He was a business manager of education at the Illinois De partment of Corrections. Mr.

Elliott was a scientist who loved knowledge and instilled in those around him the desire to learn and excel. He was a conservationist, cautioning against waste in all forms and serving as a shining example of efficiency and pride in one's work. He was a naturalist who valued a clean and healthy environment for iiimself and his family. He was a master craftsman, a builder of homes and dreams. He was a citizen who loved liis country and cheerfully worked to make it better.

He was a friend to many, his beaming smile and selfless attitude endeared him to all whose lives he touched. He was a brother and an un cle; everyone's favorite. He was a father who cried the day his sons changed "Daddy" to "Dad." He was a husband who shared lus love without reservations, simplicity and profoundly for 30 wonderful years. Mr. Elliott was a Barron Township Precinct Committeeman and trustee of Barron Township.

He was born in Grayville, to Dennis Carl Sr. and Peg (Mil-burn) Elliott He married Patricia Hudson on Dec. 15, 1968, in the First Christian Church in Sesser. He is survived by his chil dren, Murcus Ryan Elliott and Jared Michael Elliott, both at home; and brothers and sisters, Dennis C. Elliott Jr.

of Gray ville, Jack Elliott and Barry L. Elliott, both of Mount Carmel, Bud J. Elliott and Suzanne Roosevelt, both of Albion, and Stephen W. Elliott of Victor- ville, Calif. One sister, Carolyn Franland, and two brothers, David B.

and Lad R. Elliott preceded him in death. Bennie Vick HERRIN Bennie O. Vick, 83, died at noon Tuesday at Herrin Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

Pearl Lang URBANDALE Pearl May Lang, 74, died at 10:24 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 10 am. Thursday at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, with Sister Del- la Russell officiating.

Burial will be in the Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. HOSPITAL Chester Discharged Aug. ROYALTON Donald Childers, age 64, of 312 S.

Sims St. in Royalton died at 10:53 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16., 1999, at the Franklin Skilled Care Unit in Benton. Mr.

Childers was born on Feb. 2, 1935, in St Louis, Mo. to Melvin and Elizabeth (Torisky) Childers. Survivors include two broth ers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Wanda Childers of Zeigler and Bob and Miki Childers of St Louis; a sister and brother-in- law, Mary Ann and Ken Dehner of St Louis; two uncles, Elbert Childers of Royalton and Roy Childers of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a dear friend, Shirley Hubbard of Roy alton and her mother, Lillian, and Shirley's daughters, Sun shine, Teresa and Cheryl.

He was a member of St. Aloy sius Catholic Church in Royal ton and was employed by the Village of Royalton. Visitation will be from 8 am. to 9:50 am. Thursday morning at the Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 am. Thursday at St Aloysius Catholic Church in Royalton. Father Brian Barker will officiate and burial will be in St Aloysius Cemetery, east of Royalton. Frances Williams CARBONDALE Frances Williams, 78, of Carbondale passed away at 10:27 am. Mon day, Aug.

16, 1999, at Barnes- Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 10 am. Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at St Francis Xa-vier Catholic Church in Carbondale, with Father Bob Williams Flannery officiating.

Frances was born on Aug. 12, 1921, in Fredericktown, Mo. to Gilbert and Linnie (Miller) Men-teer. She married J.R. Williams in Fredericktown, Mo.

He preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1984. She is also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, George and John Glennon Men-teer and an infant sister, Mary Margaret Menteer. Survivors include two daugh ters and sons-in-law, Pat and Jack Masters of Murphysboro and Margie and Art Blair of three grandchil dren, Captain Michael Masters of Centreville1, Va, Amy Masters of Chicago and Julie Blair of Pe-catonia; two sisters, Anna Mae Smith of Carbondale and Jose phine Benton of Burleson, Texas; and two brothers, Philip Menteer of Duncanville, Texas and Frederick "Jake" Menteer of Carbondale. Frances was a lifelong mem ber of St.

Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Carbondale. She was an amateur artist who made many friendships through the art classes she participated in as a student. Melma Rahlfs CHESTER Melma Rahlfs, 71, died at 6:48 am. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at home.

Services will be at 11 am. Thursday in Peace Lutheran Church, Chester, with the Rev. Edwin Reuter officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville. Visitation will be rom 4 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Leehy was a member of the Grayville First United Meth odist Church. Surviving are her husband, Wayne; two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Charles Poiter of Du Quoin and Sandy and Ray Livesay of Grayville; two brothers, Roy Dean Bigham of Vergennes and Orville Big ham of Pinckneyville; and four grandchildren, Scott Vaughn and Jon, Daniel and Jeana Livesay. Gilliam, 79, of Du Quoin passed away at 6:21 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at the Marshall Brown ing Hospital in Du Quoin. William was a retired meat processor at Blue Bell Packing. He was a member of the Sec ond Baptist Church of Du Quoin and a member of Du Quoin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 513.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Wold War II. He was born May 15, 1920, at Du Quoin, the son of Robert H. and Violet (Waller) Gilliam. He married Olive Louise Pierce on Nov.

28, 1938, at Jackson, Mo. She passed away July 19, 1992. He is survived by two sons, Richard Gilliam of Creal Springs and William E. Gilliam of Royalton; two daughters, Janet Sue Mydler and Sherry Newborn, both of Du Quoin; two sisters, Lucille Sanders of Du Quoin and Marian George of Phoenix, a special friend, Doris Woodside of Du Quoin; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded death by his parents, wife and one sister.

Oscar D. Niestrath AMERICA Oscar D. Nies trath, 87, of the America com munity in Pulaski County, died at 9:25 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at his home.

Oscar was born April 30, 1912, in the America communi ty, the son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Leidigh) Niestrath. Oscar was a member of the Riverman Association, the Sons and Daughters of Reflector and the Boilermaker's Local 363. He worked on the St Geni- vieve and C.B. Harris Dredge Boats, and he also worked con struction and was a lifetime farmer and boilermaker. Oscar collected steam engine steamboat whistles.

Oscar married Glenna Pat Dunn on Aug. 4, 1938, and lived on his centennial farm since his marriage. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed and Bill Nies trath and by one sister, Euta Schenk. He is survived by his wife, Glenna Pat Niestrath of Ameri ca; one son and daughter-in- law, Nick and Kay Niestrath of America; one daughter, Kathy Sigman of America; two sisters, Minnie Clancy of Villa Ridge and Eva Tobias of Paducah; one brother, Herman Niestrath of Long Beach, one granddaughter, Andrea Aden of Cairo; one great-grandson, Justin Aden of America; and one great-granddaughter, Kianna Young of America. Visitation will be at the Bark- ett Funeral Home in Mounds, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m.

She was born May 2, 1912, in Carbonale to Arthur and Minnie (Rains) Holder. She married Harold E. Wil liams on Dec. 22, 1928, and he passed away Nov.

11, 1961. She then married Harry E. Cochran on July 18, 1964, and he passed away March 2, 1986. burvivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Eldon Ray and Linda Williams of Mur physboro and Thomas Wayne and Ruth Williams of Bedford, Texas; six stepchildren, Clar ence Cochran of Carbondale, Robert Cochran of Granite City, Rose Mary Saupe of Jacob and Verna Colombo, Wanda Mu- maugh and Kathryn Sudano, all of Murphysboro; 12 grandchil dren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 17 great- stepgrandchildren; one brother, Chester Holder of Carterville; and two sisters, Ethel Taylor of Palm Beach, and Evelyn Holder of Miami, Fla. She was preceded in death by one son, Harold Williams one sister, Thelma Holder, one brother, Ronald Holder, and two grandsons, Michael Ray Williams and Guy Eugene Wil liams.

Rita Heine METROPOLIS Rita Nell Heine, 67, of Metropolis, for merly of Harrisburg, died at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, in Western Baptist Hospi tal in Paducah. services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church in Metropolis, with the Rev.

Reiman, 81, died at 10:13 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, in Marion. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Walker Funeral Home in Hurst, with burial in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, Murphysboro.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Veterans Affairs Hospice, 2401 W. Main Marion, IL 62959. Mr.

Reiman was a mechanic at Swindell Motors and then at Jim Pearl. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was born Aug. 6, 1918, in De Soto to George and May (Whitson) Reiman. He married Nettie Lou O'Neal.

She died Sept. 29, 1985. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carmen and Chuck Anders of Clifton and Kristie and Mike Mayer of Chesterfield, four grandchildren, Krista Anders of Memphis, Brad Anders and wife, Amanda, and Matthew Mayer, all of Carbondale, and Melissa Mayer of Tucson, two sisters, Vesta Lilly and Al-deana Piquard, both of Hurst; and one brother, Ervin Reiman of Carbondale.
