BOQITKl SHASTEEN. Jami and Adam of Murohvsboro. a son, Tuesday, July 29, 1997, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. TO TOOTJS Memorial Continued from 4A When Paul Echols' grandfather died in 1925, he left his wife "with four boys and two girls to raise," Paul said softly. All four of those boys were in service in World War II at the same time.

"They all survived." One of Echols' photos vividly shows the impact of the war on the small town. UUin High School's bas ketball team of 1937-38 had eight members; three (Clyde Day, Herman rench and Vincent Ledbetter) per ished in the war. Bill Echols was a team member who survived. As he and Paul set out on their search last August, they went to Pin ckneyville and talked with Tom Den ton a Pearl Harbor survivor, and his son, Tom Denton Jr. "Uncle Bill always thought Paul Schneider was from Pinckneyville, because that's where he picked him up and dropped him off when they rode together.

Then we found out he was really from Vergennes," Paul said. The uncle and nephew drove to Vergennes. "We parked across from the post office and were walking back to the car when we saw the war monument in Vergennes. Paul Schneider's name was there." Schneider was one of seven from Community Continued from 4A sponsored by the Cobden American egion; the Peach Festival is held by the Cobden Lions Club. Those interested in participating may contact Spears at 833-8059.

"He's wanting to give back" to the area where he grew up, Paul said. He should have the energy as well as the resources. "Uncle Bill turned 78 Saturday and he's back in college, studying electronics at a junior college.

He made all his money selling furnace controls; he says now he's going to learn what's inside them," Paul said with a laugh. The monument was created in memory of Bill Echols' friends and his parents, H.E. and Ruth (Crippen) Echols. Those whose names are inscribed on the memorial are Ray O. Rhymer, World War Arthur Vincent Ledbetter, Robert Herman French, Lloyd Kenneth Walker, Clyde Day and" Ellis Sichling, World War II; and Robert Rogers, Korean War.

Bill Echols plans to arrive in Ullin a day or two before Saturday's dedication ceremony. He and Paul plan to make yet another journey, to the cemetery in Du Quoin where Paul Schneider is buried. "We're going to find his grave," Paul said, so his uncle can bid his beloved comrade a final farewell. Chester Church, Nelline, Cutler Discharged Chapman, Hazel, Chester Du Quoin Marshall Browning Vergennes who died in the war. A surviving brother provided the details; he had died in London in 1944 during an air raid. Paul took photos of the Vergennes memorial while they were there. He later sent the photos to his Uncle Bill, who then asked if Ullin had any memorial to its war dead. When he learned it did not.

Bill and his brother H.E. "Bucky" Echols, Paul Echols and others began working to construct a memorial. Finding the names of the casualties wasn't too difficult, Paul said. A 1945 Ullin yearbook contained the list of World War II casualties. Paul's historical collection includes 16 old copies of the Ullin Times, which his relatives had published until 1921.

"That's how I found the guy who was killed in World War I. The whole story was in one paper," Paul said. Richard Thorpe of Carbondale, who had taught at Ullin's all-black West Side School in the 1930s and '40s, "has helped me identify many people in my pictures," Paul said. "He recalled Robert Rogers, the Korean War casualty." Bill Echols has provided funds for the memorial. "My Uncle Bucky helped get the monument set up," Paul said.

Now that the memorial is finished, Bill Echols also wants to set Rodeo. The ride will take three days. Horses should be in good condition and have a negative coggins test. A donation of S6 per rider is requested. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by their parents.
