Mrs. Cavanas Scoby, librarian, said the books will be numbered and catalogued according to title, author and subject. Mrs. Scoby said 72 children FREEMAN SPUR WOMAN DIES IN HOSPITAL Mrs.

Mary Surgalski, 84. of Freeman Spur, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday in Herrin Hospit al. Born Feb. 2, 1833, in Ulaski, Poland, she was the daughter of John and Alexandria Konar- ski.

She married Hypolit Surgal ski in 1902 in Matow, Poland. Her husband died Feb. 13, 1942. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church of Herrin.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Cecilia Adelburger of Freeman Spur; sons, John T. of St. Louis, and Matthew of Freeman Spur, five grandchil dren and one great grandchild. A daughter, Margaret, pre ceded her in death.

She is also survived by a brother and sister in Poland. Services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard P.

Mongan, officiating. Burial will be in St. Carlos Cemetery in Herrin. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the Johnson Funeral Home in Herrin.

Eighteen teachers working on teacher certificates have been assigned to the summer school program. have registered in the summer reading club. Certificates will be issued to each child who reads 11 books during the summer.

Circulation for the first six months of 1967 was 2,114 boos, an increase of 890 over the previous six months. Circulation for June was 630 400 books more than the previous month, Mrs. Scoby said. Steel shelves for magazines have been added to the library, Mrs. Scoby said.

His Ph. degree was conferred at Iowa in February, 1962. He wasa first lieutenant in the U.S. Army medical service corps in 1955-56. His wife, Chloris, was born ia Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mowry, station superintendent. He said the meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

at the station's West Unit on McLafferty Road just west of the Small Group Housing units on the SIU Carbondale campus. Here participants will observe long-term peach tree pruning experiments and other work in fruit culture. From there the group will go to the station's South Unit just off U.S. Highway 31 one mile south of the Carbondale campus. Visitors will observe the fruit production and quality characteristics of peaches and apples maturing at the time.

Mowry said the Friday meeting will come at about the time Redhavcn peaches and Gravenstein apples and other maturing at about the time will be ripening Many commercial and experi mental varieties of tree fruits are being studied at the station. Walking tours of the various experimental plots with explanations and observations will comprise the meetings. Additional twilight sessions are scheduled July 28, Aug. 18, and Sept. 7.

Fruit producers and other persons interested in peaches and apples are invited to attend the meetings, MowTy said. I A Savihcs AND Chester's first attempt at a full scale summer program is working out exceptionally well, Principal Warren Buescher reported today. Buescher, principal of the Chester Community Grade School said 200 pupils are The summer program started June 12, and runs through July 24. "I personally feel many boys and girls are getting valuable experience. Our pupil-teacher ratio is about 15 to 1, which enables us to accomplish so much more than during the re gular school term," Buescher said. Teachers from the regular staff are working in supervisory capacities over student teachers from Southern Illinois University.

MRS. GOLDIA McCALLA OF CARBONDALE DIES Mrs. Goldia E. McCalla, 65, of 300 S. Marion Carbondale died at 1:30 a.m.

Sunday in Holden Hospital, Carbondale. A Carbondale resident for 31 years, Mrs. McCalla was born Dec. 29, 1901 in Grand Tower, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Benjamin Provence. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Carbondale. She was married in 1917 to the Rev. Emery B. McCalla in Grand Tower.

She leaves daughters, s. Martha Nance of Rock Falls, Mrs. Frances Claps of Kettering, Ohio. Mrs. Bernardine Doetch of Carbondale and Mrs.

Elaine Jeter of Marion: sons, Paul of Crainville, John of Saugus, David, Donald, and Lee, all of Carbondale, Homer of Marion and Dale with the U. S. Army in Frankfort, Germany; Brothers. Herman Provence of Benton and William Provence of Granite City; sisters, Mrs. Nell Brooks of Lebanon and Mrs.

Maggie Hancock of Pomona; 35 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Van Natta Funeral Home, Carbondale. The Rev. Harold Crowell, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Assembly of God Church, Carbondale.
